Women Reggae Warriors Ready For Historic Greece Tour
The Jamaica Women Reggae Warriors will face Greece in a senior international rugby league clash in Crete on Sunday, October 17, with world ranking points at stake.
The match will form part of an international double-header at the Elene Venizelou Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m. local time. The men's teams of Greece and Germany will meet in the Euro C competition later in the day.
For Jamaica, the fixture represents an important opportunity for the Women Reggae Warriors to secure their first victory on the international stage, having played four previous matches since their debut on the international stage in 2023.
Jamaica Lead coach Darren Collins said his squad has embraced the preparation for the international challenge and has established high standards from the outset.
“The preparation has been one that the players and staff have embraced. From our first training session together, the ladies set themselves high standards and are continually raising the bar, with everyone understanding what it means to represent Jamaica on the international stage,” Collins said.
“We have worked hard on all areas of our game, including fitness, defence, attack, communication and game management. Just as importantly, we have focused on building the culture, standards and unity that we want within this Jamaica team. The players have shown tremendous commitment, travelling from different areas and making sacrifices to be part of the squad.”
Collins believes the Women Reggae Warriors are travelling to Greece with a clear purpose and a determination to demonstrate their potential.
“We are not travelling to Greece simply to take part or just to try to make history. We are going there to compete and show what this Jamaica team is capable of,” he added.
The clash with Greece provides another important step in the development of the Jamaica Women Reggae Warriors as they continue to establish themselves on the international rugby league stage. The Jamaica Women National Championship (WNCC) featured three clubs this season, however, for this historic clash, the squad is expected to be made up of players based in the United Kingdom, Canada and the USA.
