Rugby League Jamaica’s (RLJ) 11th National Division 2 season kicks off on today, Saturday, April 26, with six teams vying for supremacy. Defending champions, St. Catherine Thundercats Rugby Academy will seek to turn back the challenges of last year’s defeated finalist Dulaney Park Firestorms, Mona Pelicans, West Kingston Hyenas (competing as W. Kingston Knights), Spanish Town Vikings, and Washington Blvd. Bulls.
Each team will play the others once in round-robin action over the next two weeks. The top four teams will then advance to the semi-finals on May17, with the Grand Finals set for Saturday, May 24. All games are scheduled to be played at the Mona Bowl, home of the Pelicans. Traditionally starting in November, the Division 2 competition has been repositioned this year to begin ahead of the National Club Championships (NCC)-Jamaica’s premier domestic club competition.
Looking ahead to the season, Thundercat Coach Tahj-Jay Lynch commented, “We are excited to defend our title. The boys are motivated and have prepared for match conditions. We are not only focused on taking the title again but using the opportunity hone the basic rugby league skills of our players. Our strategy is to use this competition as a preparation for a run at getting to the finals of the National Club Championship (NCC), which comes soon after Division 2 ends.”
